Two Days Professional Training held on Fundamentals of Tunneling (Facilitated by IEB)

The Transport Professionals Foundation, Bangladesh organized a two-day, 12-hour offline professional training program titled "Fundamentals of Tunneling", held on October 10th and 14th at the Conference Hall (4th Floor), IEB Building, Ramna, Dhaka. Facilitated by The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), the training brought together engineers and transport professionals to explore core concepts and practical methodologies in modern underground construction.

Key Topics Discussed:

• Geological & Geotechnical Investigation: Assessing soil and rock mechanics, ground behavior, and site conditions prior to excavation.

• Tunneling Methods & TBM Operations: Understanding conventional excavation techniques alongside mechanized tunneling using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for soft ground and hard rock.

• Tunnel Lining & Ground Support Systems: Designing and installing primary and secondary support structures, such as precast concrete segments, rock bolts, and shotcrete.

• Safety, Risk Management & Dewatering: Mitigating underground construction hazards, controlling groundwater inflow, managing settlement, and ensuring proper tunnel ventilation.

• Planning & Infrastructure Integration: Applying tunneling fundamentals to large-scale urban transport and civil infrastructure projects in Bangladesh.
